Sustainability Product Scorecards:
Measuring Environmental Impact to Create Value

For an industrial company, talking about sustainability increasingly means talking about data, measurement, and transparency. It is no longer enough to simply declare a general commitment to reducing environmental impact: customers, investors, and stakeholders are demanding clearer, more comparable, and verifiable information on how technologies, products, and solutions concretely contribute to the sustainable transition.

It is in this context that De Nora has developed the Sustainability Product Scorecards, one of the most significant projects within its 2030 Sustainability Plan. These are true “identity cards” for products from an environmental perspective, designed to make the contribution of De Nora’s technologies—in terms of environmental impact—more understandable to customers and within the sectors in which they operate.

The scorecards stem from a specific need: to transform technical information, environmental indicators, and sustainability data into a clear, useful, and accessible tool. They are not merely communication materials, but rather a tool to concretely illustrate the environmental value of De Nora’s technologies and their role within a sustainability-oriented industrial strategy.

The 2030 Sustainability Plan and Green Innovation

In December 2023, De Nora launched its first Sustainability Plan for 2030. One of the plan’s most distinctive pillars is Green Innovation.

For De Nora, this pillar is linked to the development of technologies that, when in use and integrated into customers’ production processes, can help reduce environmental impact, improve efficiency, optimize the use of resources—including water—and enable more sustainable industrial applications.

It is precisely within this framework that the Sustainability Product Scorecards fit, designed as concise yet structured documents capable of gathering and presenting the most relevant information on the environmental impact of De Nora’s products, systems, and components.

Each scorecard clearly highlights—in an organized manner and where applicable—the product’s key benefits, the most significant environmental indicators, elements related to life-cycle analysis, and its contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In this way, data that would often remain confined to complex technical analyses becomes more understandable to various audiences: customers, industrial partners, investors, institutional stakeholders, and internal departments.

The value of the scorecards lies precisely in this ability to translate information. On the one hand, they maintain a strong link to technical data and methodologies through appropriate documentation supporting the calculations; on the other hand, they make this information usable in a broader dialogue on the environmental value of technologies, meeting customers’ sustainability requirements and fostering growing awareness of these issues among all stakeholders.

For a company like De Nora, which operates in highly technology- and industry-intensive sectors, this step is particularly important. Many of its solutions are components or systems integrated into complex processes: electrodes, electrochemical technologies, water treatment systems, and solutions for advanced industrial applications. Making their environmental contribution visible means helping the market better understand the value these technologies generate along the value chain.

Sustainability, Performance, and Competitive Benefit

One of the most significant aspects of the project is the link between sustainability and performance. Sustainability Product Scorecards are designed not only to describe a product’s environmental impact but also to highlight how certain features aimed at reducing environmental impact can translate into an economic benefit for the customer.

A more energy-efficient product, for example, helps reduce the environmental impact of the process in which it is used. At the same time, however, it can also generate a direct economic benefit, because lower energy consumption means lower operating costs. The same applies to durability: technology designed to last longer reduces the need for frequent replacements, limits material consumption, and improves return on investment. For electrodes, an additional value proposition is the ability to extend the product’s lifespan through processes such as recoating (i.e., reactivating an electrode that has reached the end of its life, thereby allowing the metal substrate to be reused). This contributes to circularity by reducing the need to produce new components from scratch, while also offering the customer a solution that is more efficient from both an economic and operational standpoint.

Scorecards, therefore, help highlight an aspect that is often central to industrial technologies: sustainability and competitiveness are not two separate goals. When a product, over its life cycle, consumes less energy, lasts longer, can be remanufactured, or supports more efficient processes, it simultaneously generates both environmental and economic value.

For De Nora, this represents an important positioning factor. In fact, scorecards make it possible to highlight, in a more structured way, characteristics that are already part of the company’s technological offering but that currently require clearer tools to be measured and communicated.

Measurable, integrated, and value-driven sustainability

The Sustainability Product Scorecards demonstrate how environmental sustainability can become a measurable characteristic of technologies, not just a general principle or a stated goal. Through this project, De Nora makes the link between innovation, environmental impact, and customer value more explicit.

This journey is set to evolve with new scorecards, new products, and an increasingly sophisticated level of analysis and communication. But the underlying principle of the project is already clear: to contribute to the transition toward a more sustainable global system, technologies must not only be developed and applied, but also measured, communicated, and understood.

In this sense, the Sustainability Product Scorecards represent a concrete tool for transforming sustainability into useful information, dialogue with the market, and shared value.

Behind every scorecard lies methodological, technical, and cross-functional work involving data collection, environmental analysis, product management, sustainability, and marketing. This will be the focus of our next in-depth analysis: exploring the method De Nora uses to build its scorecards and make the environmental impact of its technologies measurable.
