Milan, November 13, 2023 – Industrie De Nora, an Italian multinational company specializing in electrochemistry and a leader in sustainable technologies, successfully concluded the twelfth edition of its Symposium — an event dedicated to the international scientific community that focused on energy transition and technological innovation. The event took place on November 8 in the unique setting of Milan’s Castello Sforzesco.

The Symposium serves as a platform for discussion and collaboration on research and innovation topics, engaging high-profile speakers and representatives from academia and research institutions. Its ultimate goal is to strengthen the international scientific network by bringing together scientists, researchers, professionals, and young talents to foster new relationships and collaboration opportunities. Over the years, the event has initiated and strengthened more than 22 collaborations, promoted 5 research projects sponsored by De Nora, and supported one project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Numerous new ideas have also emerged from exchanges among participants, potentially leading to over 30 new research initiatives, as well as the creation of industry–university consortia in the United States, Europe, and Japan, such as Water Europe and NAWI (National Alliance for Water Innovation) in the U.S.

The event reflects De Nora’s commitment to driving innovation, developing new technologies, and deepening scientific knowledge. A special focus is placed on engaging and attracting bright young minds, with over 50 young researchers and PhD candidates — both from within De Nora and from external institutions — participating, creating opportunities for connection, recruitment, and talent development.
A distinctly international initiative, the Symposium has, over the years, featured speakers from leading universities in the USA, UK, Canada, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Israel, Japan, and South Africa.

This year’s event was structured around three thematic panels focused on: Energy Transition and Electrode Technologies, Hydrogen and Industrial Innovations, and Water Technologies — all moderated by De Nora representatives. Within the hydrogen panel, Federica Iacoe, Roberto Vescovo, and Manlio Bellocchio presented the Gigafactory project: the creation of a large-scale production hub with a capacity of up to 2 GW for the manufacturing of electrolyzers.

Among the distinguished participants were: Luca Costamagna (President of the Culture Commission, City of Milan); Prof. Mike Lyons (Trinity College Dublin); Prof. Raffaella Buonsanti (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne – EPFL); Prof. Alessandro Minguzzi (University of Milan); Dr. Desiree Leistenschneider (Friedrich Schiller University); Prof. Luca Beverina (University of Milano-Bicocca); Prof. Rüdiger-A. Eichel (Forschungszentrum Jülich, RWTH Aachen University, JARA-Energy); Dr. Riccardo Zaffaroni (Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research – TNO); and Prof. Manuela Antonelli and Prof. Silvia Franz (Politecnico di Milano).
