Milan, October 30, 2024 – The construction of the Gigafactory, a project by De Nora - an Italian multinational company specializing in electrochemistry and a leader in sustainable technologies and the emerging green hydrogen industry – continues fast. It concerns the construction of the largest electrolyzer production hub in Italy, with a capacity that will reach 2GW equivalent by 2030.
Following the Groundbreaking Ceremony held in June 2024, the building of the Gigafactory now sees further significant progress thanks to the identification of the General Contractor and the obtaining of all bureaucratic authorizations. In particular, Techbau - a leading company – was identified as the General Contractor for the project, allowing to speed up the site’s implementation process by relying on a single point of contact for every step.
These developments provide visibility of the expected timing of the Gigafactory's realization, assuming the achievement of an additional milestone in the first quarter of 2025.
Paolo Dellachà, De Nora’s CEO, commented, “We announce with satisfaction the selection of Techbau as General Contractor for the Gigafactory project, a further confirmation of our commitment to positively conclude this project with ambitious timelines, significantly contributing to the national and European energy transition. Thus, the construction site in Cernusco sul Naviglio, Milan, is proceeding at a fast pace, just a few months after the Groundbreaking Ceremony. Now, we are working with determination to announce further progress in the first quarter of 2025.”
Sustainability and Innovation
The Gigafactory will cover an area of about 40,000 square meters and will be an innovative and sustainable building. Powered by photovoltaic panels, which will produce green electricity, the facility is designed to minimize CO2 emissions.
Reduced environmental impact will also be possible through the adoption of solutions based on the inclusion of green areas in urban environments (Nature Based Solutions), the control and monitoring of energy efficiency through smart systems, and the promotion of green mobility. Great attention is also paid to the issue of lighting, exploiting natural light as much as possible and adopting dynamic control systems, always with an eye to energy efficiency. Moreover, sustainable materials have been selected for construction, also taking into account their disposal characteristics, and green urban drainage systems have been provided.
All of these elements contribute to the achievement of LEED environmental certification for sustainable buildings and qualify the Gigafactory as a project that brings concrete benefits to the community and to the urban space where it is, creating a truly cutting-edge and fully sustainable manufacturing hub.
