ClorTec®, On-site low-strength sodium hypochlorite generators

Generate low-strength (0.8%) sodium hypochlorite on-site from salt for safe, reliable, and cost-effective water treatment. The latest generation ClorTec systems deliver up to 15% operating cost savings over previous designs while continuing the tradition of reliability and durability our partners have come to expect from De Nora.

De Nora brings 100 years of electrochlorination experience with more than 5,000 electrochlorination systems operating worldwide, including the world's largest generation by volume of 9,525 kg/day; and more than 100 installations in China, including remote areas such as Tibet, Xinjiang and Qinghai.

Why ClorTec technology?

The on-site low-strength generation of chlorine-based chemistries provides a safe, economical, and effective solution for the treatment of water. Using only salt, water, and electricity, ClorTec systems generate a powerful and highly effective oxidant on-site, where you need it, when you need it, eliminating the transportation of hazardous chemicals.

ClorTec Gen III
  • Our innovative and patent pending ClorTec technological advancements result in low levels of chlorate production during the electrolysis process. Future-proof your water system from stringent chlorate regulations while saving money at the same time!
  • At the heart of every ClorTec electrochlorination system are DSA® electrodes pioneered by De Nora. Single source responsibility ensures system compatibility and long life, so you get the most out of your system.
  • Relying on its core electrode technology, De Nora ClorTec systems feature one of the lowest salt and power consumption among similar technologies in the industry, thus helping owners to further reduce the operation cost:
    • The salt consumption can be as low as 2.8kg/kg available chlorine.
    • The electricity consumption can be as low as 4.4kWh/kg available chlorine.
  • Available with remote monitoring and control, along with automated chlorine dosing control, operation of the system is easy. Simplified instrumentation and control, optimized process flow, and reduced system complexity, making operation and maintenance easier reducing your labor costs and whole-life cost.
  • ClorTec systems are available in sizes ranging from 25-3000 lb/day (0.5 – 57 kg/hr) Free Available Chlorine (FAC) for a single skid mounted unit. Multiple skids can be operated in parallel where more capacity is required. It can meet different treatment requirements and is the only on-site low-strength chlorine generation system (0.8%) on the market that can be stand-mounted or skid-mounted.

ClorTec process at a glance.

  1. 1. The softened water passes through the salt dissolving tank to produce the saturated brine solution.

  2. 2. Saturated brine is then diluted with additional softened water to provide a brine solution with a concentration of about 30 grams per liter of NaCl, which then feeds the ClorTec electrolyzer.

  3. 3. By applying direct current, the brine solution passes through the electrolyzer fitted with De Nora DSA electrodes, producing a solution of sodium hypochlorite with a concentration of free available chlorine of 0.8% (8000 ppm of active chlorine).

  4. 4. The PLC monitors the process parameters online, such as temperature and the level of electrolyte flowing into the electrolyzer, to ensure safe and efficient operation at all times.

  5. 5. Hydrogen gas will be removed from each electrolyzer separately and diluted by air before being discharged to the atmosphere, ensuring that the hydrogen concentration is far from the lower explosion limit. ClorTec electrolyzers are designed to remove hydrogen quickly and efficiently, thus improving safety.

  6. 6. After passing through one or more electrolyzers, the sodium hypochlorite solution flows into the storage tank. The electrolyzer measures the temperature in real time , to ensure that the system does not overheat during operation.

  7. 7. A liquid level sensor is placed at the outlet of the last electrolyzer, ensuring that the electrolyzer is fully filled with electrolyte before the electrodes are energized.

  8. 8. The ClorTec system is automatically controlled by a PLC control cabinet with touch screen.

ClorTec technology features several market innovations:

  • Open skid frame for easy access to parts from all angles during maintenance.
  • High current/low voltage process is applied for electrolysis, which improves the electrolysis process efficiency.
