Capital Controls® Chlorine Dioxide Generators for water treatment

For generations, the Capital Controls® name has been synonymous with disinfection* in water treatment. With hundreds of chlorine dioxide generator installations around the world, De Nora has leveraged that expertise, developing the next stage in chlorine dioxide production - a modern, flexible, and safe line of chlorine dioxide generators.

Because it does not promote the formation of TTHM or HAA disinfection byproducts (DBP), chlorine dioxide is ideal for pre-oxidation of surface water for drinking water applications. Chlorine dioxide oxidizes iron and manganese, is effective over a wide pH range, and does not react with ammonia. It is used for Legionella control, membrane pre-treatment and biofouling control, algae control, and treatment of ammonia-rich waters such as fish farming. De Nora offers a range of systems under vacuum or under water, which ensures the safe operation of the systems.

Why Choose Capital Controls Chlorine Dioxide Generators for Contaminant Removal Applications?

The Capital Controls G50 series generators use commercially available chlorine gas and 25-31% sodium chlorite to produce up to 2,500 PPD (50 kg/h) of chlorine dioxide on a single skid for water treatment, making it ideal for applications where chlorine gas is used for primary disinfection.

The Capital Controls T70 series generators use commercially available 31% hydrochloric acid and 25-31% sodium chlorite to produce up to 529 lb/day (10 kg/h) of chlorine dioxide for water treatment, without requiring chlorine gas or sodium hypochlorite (bleach).

New to the family are the ISIA L and U type underwater chlorine dioxide generators. These systems combine hydrochloric acid and sodium chlorite in a reactor that is submerged under water to ensure superior safety, with output that can be injected directly into a pressurized pipe or water basin.

  • Expertise: De Nora, through the Capital Controls brand, and De Nora ISIA have wide ranging experience, especially in the Middle East, where the underwater design is the chlorine dioxide (ClO2) system of choice.
  • Safe Design: Chlorine dioxide is generated on demand, and reagents are mixed under water and injected directly into the water being treated. ISIA chlorine dioxide generators minimize disinfection byproduct formation.
  • Effective & Reliable: In-line dosing of chlorine dioxide offers efficient consumption of chemical precursors with 5.7 kg HCl per 1 kg of ClO2 generated and a production yield of 95-98%. Underwater design treats up to 50,000 m3 of water per hour based on a ClO2 concentration of 0.4 mg/L, with standardized production capacities from 0.5 to 20 kg/h and engineered solutions from 60 g/h to 100 kg/h of ClO2.

How Capital Controls Chlorine Dioxide Generators Work in Contaminant Removal Applications

Chlorine Dioxide Schema

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a powerful disinfectant and oxidizing agent commonly used in water treatment and other industrial applications. The generation of chlorine dioxide involves the reaction of precursor chemicals, usually sodium chlorite (NaClO2) and hydrochloric acid (HCl 31-33%), in a reaction chamber. The general steps of chlorine dioxide generation are as follows:

1. Chemical Feed:

  • • Sodium chlorite (NaClO2) and an acid precursor are typically stored in separate chemical feed tanks.
  • • These chemicals are then pumped or metered into a reaction chamber in controlled amounts.

2. Reaction Chamber:

  • • In the reaction chamber, a chemical reaction between sodium chlorite and the acid takes place.
  • • The chemical reaction produces chlorine dioxide in a liquid solution along with other by-products .

3. ClO2 Dissolution:

  • • The chlorine dioxide produced in the reaction chamber is then dissolved into a carrier solution, typically water.
  • • This forms a solution of chlorine dioxide, which can be further diluted as needed for specific applications.

4. Application:

  • • The chlorine dioxide solution can be used for various disinfection and oxidation purposes, such as water treatment, wastewater treatment, and industrial processes.

Based on a patented underwater production technology, Capital Controls U and L-Type chlorine dioxide is produced in a small reaction chamber, which is installed in-line, and is injected directly into the water requiring treatment. In this way, the chlorine dioxide is present only in the treated water, which ensures superior safety and efficiency.
